PAINTER Frances Okala

I create visual artworks that depict our African Tradition, I use motifs and patterns to define forms and emotion.

Frances Okala is an Architect by profession and an Artist by inspiration. She hails from Onitsha in Anambra state.

She attended Queen’s College, Lagos and then went on to study Architecture at Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife where she obtained a Bachelors and also a Masters degrees.

At 2015 she was in the construction industry before she decided to take the plunge and pursue her career in Art ,her first love.

She uses mainly pen and ink on a black and white or multicolour composition.She creates patterns and uses them to define the forms and shapes in her compositions.Her concepts are mainly African and she is influenced a lot by traditional motifs and patterns.

Artist’s statement: I create visual artworks that depict our African Tradition, I use motifs and patterns to define forms and emotion . I work with acrylic paint and ink,in a world filled with sadness and everything bland,my art is but a ray of hope in these dark patches of the world .

Art for me is an expression of our culture and environment. My work portrays everyday events in traditional settings sometimes in abstract form but all aimed at bringing us back to our roots and appreciating our culture and heritage.
